HOW TO ADJUST THE PH OF THE CREAM
In my video, the pH of the final product was around 5.5 – so I did not need to adjust it. But depending on the ingredients you use (hydrosols, extracts, preservatives, etc.), the pH of your cream might be either too low (3,5 – 4,5) or too high (6-7). In this case, you need to adjust it.
If the pH is too low (below 5):
- dilute 2 g of baking soda with 8 g of WARM boiled water, add 5-7 drops of this solution to the cream, stir well and measure the pH again
If the pH is too high (6 or more):
- -dilute 1 g of citric acid with 9 g of distilled water, add 2-3 drops of this solution to the cream, stir and measure the pH again
You need to bring the pH of your cream to 5-5.5.
HOW TO SELECT THE VEGETABLE OILS FOR YOUR CREAM
The choice of oils depends on your budget, accessibility, and your skin type:
- mature and dry skin: sunflower seed oil (cold pressed), sesame oil, argan oil, wheat germ oil, avocado oil, shea butter.
- oily skin: jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil (MCT oil, or caprylic/capric triglycerides; not to be confused with regular coconut oil, which is not suitable for oily skin), grape seed oil, hazelnut oil
- normal and young skin: almond oil, apricot kernel oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, shea butter
All listed oils have relatively high stability and can be used in daycare products (they do not oxidize in light).
DIY FACE MOISTURIZING CREAM FOR OILY AND ACNE-PRONE SKIN
The formula from the video tutorial may be a bit heavy for you if you have oily and/or acne-prone skin. In formulas for oily skin, we usually reduce the % of oils and increase the % of water phase to make the texture lighter.
To make the emulsion more stable, we also add a natural gelling agent (xanthan), which provides additional moisturizing benefits for the skin.
- 78 g of distilled water (you can take chamomile, lavender, sage hydrolat)
- 5 g emulsifier Olivem 1000
- 5 g fractionated coconut oil
- 5 g hazelnut oil
- 5 g glycerin extract (for example, green tea glycerin extract)
- 0.6 g of lavender essential oil (or you can take tea tree EO if your skin is acne-prone)
- 0.6 g natural preservative Cosgard (Sharomix 721)
- 0.3 g natural gelling agent xanthan (xanthan gum)
- 0.2 g concentrated vitamin E
Mix xanthan and glycerine extract in a separate beaker and make a slurry, then combine it with water and mix well. Then follow the instruction from the video.
DIY FACE MOISTURIZING CREAM FOR DRY AND SENSITIVE SKIN
Dry skin, even in summer, needs more thorough hydration and protection, so we slightly change the formula, increasing the percentage of emollients that cover the skin with a comfortable protective film. This cream has a slightly thicker texture than the one from the video:
- 67 g of distilled water (you can also use lavender hydrosol or chamomile hydrosol)
- 7 g of emulsifier Olivem 1000
- 7 g of shea butter
- 7 g of avocado oil or wheat germ oil
- 5 g of sunflower seed oil
- 5 g of glycerin extract (choose extracts that have soothing properties)
- 0.8 g of lavender or chamomile essential oil
- 0.6 g of natural preservative Cosgard (Sharomix 721)
- 0.2 g of concentrated vitamin E
