If somebody asked me to share my favorite cosmetic recipe, I would share this one: curing hand balm, my grandma’s recipe. It restores and protects skin in winter (and in Siberia (where my grandma was born) winters are harsh, you know). No other creme or lotion ever was as effective in taking care of my hands as this one!
My grandma used mink fat (this ingredient is prevalent in Siberia). I have replaced it with butter – shea and coconut, which are also very beneficial for the skin and animal-friendly at the same time.
DRY HANDS RESCUE BALM
This homemade hand balm is truly magical; it works like the thinnest gloves, covering the skin with a protective film, restoring it, and deeply moisturizing. And even if your skin is in a horrible condition, it will help you to bring it back to normal, I promise!
You have 4 potent components in it:
- natural oils that restore skin’s natural protective barrier, nourish and soothe the skin;
- natural beeswax, which gives the balm its texture and covers the hand surface with a protective film (this film does not allow moisture to evaporate);
- natural lanolin, which has an incredible ability to heal cracks, deeply moisturize and restore even the driest skin;
- natural honey deeply moisturizes the skin, heals wounds and cracks, and relieves irritation.
All those components are easy to find or order online, they are 100% natural and very effective!
HOMEMADE HAND BALM WITH HONEY AND LANOLINE
- 3 tbsp coconut butter
- 3 tbsp shea butter
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp grapeseeds oil
- 1 tsp of lanolin
- 4 tbsp of beeswax
- 1 tbsp of raw honey
Combine butter, oils, and beeswax in a container and put it in a double boiler – warm it up till the wax is melted, remove it from the heat, and let it cool a bit. Raw honey and shea butter do not support heat, so you need to steer them in your balm when it is still warm (and liquid), but not too hot.

If you like to add essential oils to your balm, this is a good moment as well. You can add 10-15 drops of lavender, geranium, camomile, or ilang-ilang oils, they do magic for dry and irritated skin.
If properly stored, this balm can last for approximately 5-6 months, you can keep it at room temperature.
