DIY solid Zero Waste Highlighter

Zero Waste highlighter

This 100% natural solid DIY zero waste highlighter is easy to make; it gives your skin glowing (and also it makes a great gift!)

You can put it in a cheesecloth bag and keep it in your cosmetic bag, and you can travel with it and use it both for your face and body! It gives your skin this sunny look, and it is a responsible vacation must-have! And the best thing – it also takes great care of your skin (like a solid body butter)!

I use shea butter, cocoa butter, soybean wax, and two different types of mica – golden one and Poudre de Lumiére by Aroma Zone. The second one gives a natural shine without yellow traces, so I highly recommend trying it.

If you live in a very hot climate, I recommend replacing soybean wax with beeswax. The melting point of soybean wax is relatively low and in a hot environment (where the temperature is around 38-40 degrees Celsius (100-104 degrees Fahrenheit), the beeswax will keep it solid, while soybean wax can start melting.

This zero waste highlighter also makes a great gift, especially for those who want to keep their life plastic- and waste-free.

You can get the full recipe and step-by-step guide in my short video tutorial:

You can replace shea butter with coconut butter, but keep in mind that the melting point of coconut butter is lower, so your bar won’t be solid enough. If you swap ingredients and take softer butter for your recipe, increase the wax percentage to keep your zero waste highlighter stable.

You can use whatever silicone mold you have, but I find it easier to use a round or an egg-shaped mold (for example, the one we use to make chocolate eggs) – this makes the bar more convenient to use. You can put it in the fridge to solidify if you want, or just leave it for 1-2 hours and then take it out of the mold.

Enjoy!
